My preferred name is Lucretia but I was legally named Ssenyonjo John, a transgender female from Uganda. I liked the name, Lucretia. When I recognized there is someone special within my body who is not John, I decided to name her that. I, therefore, feel bittersweet, special, and unique when someone calls me by that name. No one gave it to me; I gave it to myself.
The Amnesty International Report 2020/21 documents the human rights situation in 149 countries in 2020, as well as providing global and regional analysis. It presents Amnesty lnternational’s concerns and calls for action to governments and others. During 2020, the world was rocked by COVID-19. The pandemic and measures taken to tackle it impacted everyone, but also threw into stark relief, and sometimes aggravated, existing inequalities and patterns of abuse.
This opinion poll was jointly commissioned by the Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights, Kenya Legal and Ethical Issues Network, Katiba Institute, International Commission of Jurists – Kenya Section, HakiJamii, Haki Africa, Federation of International Women Lawyers, Centre for Rights Education and Awareness and Amnesty International.
Through our research, advocacy, and campaigning with others we actively combat human rights violations in Kenya. Our efforts extend to building local human rights movements, holding perpetrators accountable for their actions, challenging oppressive legislation, and securing the release of individuals unjustly imprisoned solely for expressing their opinions.
Amnesty International Kenya condemns the increasing trend by the Kenyan authorities to undermine the lawful right to assemble and protest under Article 37.
