STATEMENT

Nairobi, 12 May 2025: Federation of International Women Lawyers, The Constitution and Reform Education Consortium-Kenya, Siasa Place, Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU), Baraza Media Lab, Transparency International Kenya and Amnesty International Kenya met with His Excellency Alexander Stubb, the President of the Republic of Finland, First Lady Suzanne Innes-Stubb and Senior Officials of the Government of Finland.
The leadership of the seven organisations working on governance, media freedom, youth empowerment, women and human rights discussed the current human rights and governance environment and the role the Finnish Government could play in Kenya, regionally and internationally.
The meeting discussed the imperative for accountability for the deaths and abductions of Kenyan protesters, ways of supporting Kenyans’ efforts to strengthen media independence as well as youth political inclusion, reducing femicide and gender-based violence, corruption and impunity, digital disinformation and human rights violations.
The organisations encouraged the Government of Finland to accelerate its support for the protection of the rule of law, ethical, democratic and accountable governance in the lead up to the 2027 General Elections and beyond.
