UPDATE ON THE POLICE SERGEANT AHMED RASHID IN PURSUIT OF JUSTICE FOR JAMAL MOHAMED AND MOHAMED DAHIR KHERI

Nairobi, 7 December 2013: It has been eight years since Police Sergeant Ahmed Rashid was captured shooting two young men, Jamal Mohamed and Mohamed Dahir Kheri, in front of a public crowd in Eastleigh, Nairobi.

It has been one year since Police Sergeant Ahmed Rashid was charged with murder on two counts of killing the two victims. Over the last year, the defence has challenged the court’s jurisdiction, evidence, summons and objected to plea-taking. The case was also delayed to accommodate the suspect’s claim of illness.

In Kibera High Court today, the Police Reforms Working Group and Missing Voices Alliance heard the State intends to call 25 witnesses, including police officers, to prove the unlawful murder of Jamal Mohamed and Mohamed Dahir Kheri.

“Amnesty International Kenya appreciates the resumption of the case and this pre-trial hearing. Victims’s families deserve to hear what happened to their sons. The suspect also has the right to a fair trial and, as he was today, represented by a lawyer of his choice,” says Amnesty International Kenya Executive Director Irũngũ Houghton.
