The above-listed organisations commend the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for the swift investigations into the brutal murder of Edwin Kiprotich Chiloba. The investigations have resulted in a confession and arrest of four suspects. We laud their efforts to ensure that perpetrators of this heinous act are brought before a court of law. We call upon the LGBTQ+ community and the general public to share additional information to help prosecute this case.
In the aftermath of the murders of Mohammed Zaid and Zulfiqra Ahmed and their Kenyan driver Nicodemus Mwania, a lot is coming to light about enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. Almost a year earlier, it was reported that bodies were being dumped in gunny bags in River Yala by unknown people. Investigations revealed that the 25 bodies found in the river were from surrounding and far-flung areas.

Responding to the news of the disbandment of Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations Special Service Unit (SSU), Amnesty International Kenya’s Director Irungu Houghton said:
PRESS STATEMENT
Wednesday, August 31, 2022
The recent brutal killings of seven women in Nakuru County horrified the nation. Within weeks, police had arrested over a 100 youth and are now being accused of summarily executing four suspects. Yesterday, three police officers were convicted for killing the Mavoko 3. As the Jubilee regime prepares its handover, will extra-judicial killings be its darkest stain?
Following the public interest in the discovery of over thirty bodies, Amnesty International Kenya has completed a fact-finding mission to the area around River Yala. Contrary to the statement of the Police Spokesperson, we can confirm that the bodies were dumped and retrieved from the river between July 2021 and January 2022, with more bodies being discovered, the latest one this morning. Further investigation is required to reconcile the numbers documented by human rights defenders (31), Yala Hospital Morgue (21), and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (19).
