Nairobi, 29 September 2026: Today, we stood in court in solidarity with the families of Jamal Mohamed and Dahir Kheir as they continue their long pursuit of truth, justice and accountability. We had expected the final prosecution witness to take the stand, but the matter has now been adjourned to 26 November 2026 for mention.
The families have waited long enough. While we welcome the progress made in these proceedings, justice must be delivered without undue delay. Prolonged delays deepen the pain, uncertainty and frustration of families who have spent years seeking answers and accountability.
Amnesty International’s position is clear: no one is above the law. Allegations of unlawful killings by police officers must be promptly, thoroughly, independently and impartially investigated. Where sufficient admissible evidence exists, those responsible must be prosecuted in proceedings that meet international human rights standards.
At the same time, accountability must go hand in hand with respect for the rights of the accused, including the right to due process and a fair trial. These principles do not contradict the pursuit of justice. They are fundamental to it. Justice must be pursued in a manner that upholds the rights of all parties and the integrity of the justice system.
This journey began in 2017, and the families of Jamal Mohamed and Dahir Kheir have shown immense courage and resilience in their pursuit of justice. We recognise the continued solidarity of the Social Justice Movement, the Mathare community, civil society organisations, the media and all those who have stood with the families over the years.
We were in court today because standing with families seeking justice must not be a one-time act. We will continue to stand with them.
We urge Kenyans, civil society and all institutions committed to justice and accountability to remain in solidarity with these families. The length of the journey must not diminish our commitment to seeing justice done.
