Amnesty International welcomes the news that Kenyan activist Mwabili Mwagodi has been found alive after Mwabili Mwagodi’s enforced disappearance in Tanzania. We salute the public pressure generated by his family, the public, and the leadership of VOCAL Africa and Muslims for Human Rights (Muhuri), as well as others.
The silence of both Tanzanian and Kenyan governments during his prolonged detention, transportation and abandonment is deeply troubling. We reiterate our call for independent, impartial investigations, accountability in the East African Court of Justice, as well as protection for Mwagodi and other activists who face increased risks. We also recommit our solidarity with all working to defend human rights across East Africa today.
