I wanted my voice heard because I knew that my future mattered, not only to me but to those close to me and being able to exercise my right to protest served as a means to quell the rising tide of uncertainty that had begun rising within me. I also wanted to represent the rising tide of political conspicuousness among my age group, the Generation Z. It was paramount for me to be here because if I was not going to stand up and represent the youth who feel adversely affected by the new financial measures, I was certain that no one would.

24-year-old Alvin Obanyi – Gen Z Protestor

We have dedicated this room to Rex Masai, the first casualty of the 2024 Gen Z protests, and to all the brave youth who came out to exercise their freedom of expression, those who paid the ultimate price, faced abduction or endured arrest. Armed only with the Kenyan flag, whistles, and mobile phones, these young people stood boldly for justice and accountability, embodying the spirit of peaceful resistance. Their courage was met with brutal police force, but their legacy endures as a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the ongoing fight for freedom. This room stands as a space of remembrance, reflection, and a call to action to safeguard the rights they so valiantly defended.
