We are few people who are out here [in Uganda]. Me, I’m a professional teacher, I went to nice schools. My role is to fight and liberate.

David Kato

We have named this room after David Kato, a courageous Ugandan teacher and trailblazing LGBT rights activist widely regarded as the father of Uganda’s gay rights movement. As Uganda’s first openly gay man, David fearlessly stood at the forefront of the fight for equality, challenging deep-seated prejudice and advocating for the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ individuals in a hostile environment. His unwavering commitment to justice and visibility inspired countless others to stand up for their truth, despite immense personal risk. This room honours his profound legacy, serving as a reminder of his bravery and the ongoing fight for love, equality, and human rights for all.
