INTRODUCTION
ICON Data Learning (IDL) Labs is a youth-led, youth-serving, community-focused organization operating from Western Kenya Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB). Our vision is to promote data-driven community transformation for sustainable development. IDL acknowledges the significant role of data fluency and the transformative potential of accessible, high-quality data in the success of development programs.
IDL’s work is built on the strength of co-creation and collaboration with like-minded partners, individuals, and organizations to generate evidence and deliver data-driven solutions. We achieve this through four Key thematic areas:
i) Collaborative Networks, ii) Data Literacy, iii) Data Advocacy, and iv) Data Tech Incubation to create project and organization-specific solutions.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Youth-led and youth-serving organizations mostly operate in low-resource settings, facing capacity and financial resource constraints. This negatively impacts their ability to fully implement digital rights and data protection measures as set out in the Kenya Data Protection Act and, consequently, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This is even though digital penetration and the prevalence of lack of fluency in digital components are exacerbating the difficulties experienced by communities more so for the youth (marginalized) populations. Nevertheless, there is a great opportunity for youth organizations to collaborate with communities to co-create context-specific actions that will realize digital rights and data protection.
IDL is collaborating with Amnesty International Kenya to implement a six-month project titled ‘Ijue Data Yako II: Youth-led Activism for Digital Rights and Data Protection’ among non-profit organizations in Kisumu and Kakamega Counties. Ijue Data Yako II is part of our broader goal to reach underserved populations in the Lake Region, Western Kenya, with Digital Rights Information and Data Protection. The project’s main objective is to promote Locally-Led Awareness on Digital Rights and Data Protection among CSOs in Kisumu and Kakamega Counties. The specific objectives of this project include;
- To train 20 local CSOs in different thematic areas in Western Kenya on digital rights and data protection.
- To support the 20 local CSOs who were trained in kick-starting their regulatory pathway with the Kenya Data Protection Act 2019 within their organizations.
- Establish partnerships with at least two local radio stations to raise awareness and advocate for digital rights and data protection, ensuring broad community engagement and impact.
- To undertake a mini-implementation research to assess the effectiveness of the hybrid training model in enhancing knowledge, attitude and practice on digital rights and data protection.
CRITERIA
Eligible organizations include;
- Youth-led or youth-serving organizations
- Organizations that are legally registered and have an operational history of at least 6 months
- Organizations with a presence in Kisumu or Kakamega Counties.
- Organizations willing to assign a representative to the project for at least 4 months. The representative should be available at least 3-4 hours weekly to attend virtual sessions and work with IDL teams during physical support sessions.
