Nairobi, Kenya, September 19, 2025: Amnesty International Kenya extends its congratulations to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) on its remarkable achievement at the 47th Global Privacy Assembly in Seoul, South Korea. The ODPC’s recognition in four prestigious categories —Education and Public Awareness, Dispute Resolution and Enforcement Measures, Innovation, and the People’s Choice Award —is a testament to its unwavering commitment to protecting the fundamental right to privacy in Kenya.
Since 2019, Amnesty International Kenya, through its data governance program, has worked closely with partners to strengthen data governance in Kenya and has witnessed firsthand the strides the ODPC has made in just five years. The ODPC’s dedication to championing compliance and enforcing the Data Protection Act has been instrumental in safeguarding the privacy rights of all Kenyans. This global recognition reaffirms the ODPC’s role as a leader not only in Kenya but also on the international stage.
Amnesty International Kenya also acknowledges the support from the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy. This support has been vital in enabling the ODPC to fulfil its mandate and achieve such significant milestones.
As we celebrate these achievements, we also urge the government and all stakeholders to provide the ODPC with adequate resources. To deepen this vital work of protecting the privacy rights of Kenyans, the ODPC must be adequately funded and supported. Increased support will enable it to scale up its initiatives, further enforce the law, and continue its trajectory as a beacon of data protection excellence. Amnesty International Kenya remains committed to furthering our collaborations to ensure data privacy remains a cornerstone of human rights in Kenya.
