Heartfelt Condolences on the Passing of Mama Victor

Nairobi, 24 April 2024: Amnesty International Kenya receives with shock and sadness the news that Benna “Mama Victor” Buluma and at least two members of her family have died in the flash floods being experienced in Nairobi.

Mama Victor’s courageous spirit and unwavering dedication to seeking truth and justice for victims of police brutality have left an indelible mark on our hearts and minds. Her leadership as the Convener of the Mothers of Victims and Survivors Network was instrumental in providing support to families affected by extrajudicial killings and in amplifying the voices of those who sought accountability and redress.

We have lost a courageous fighter for justice in Mama Victor as we knew her. When others thought it was too risky to call for justice, she spoke out on their behalf. Many family members of victims found their courage to speak out in her presence. Her solidarity and optimism offered many the opportunity to heal and to continue pressing for justice for their fallen.

Tragically, Benta Buluma died before securing justice for her two sons Victor and Benard, both killed by police officers during the elections related protests in 2017. Her resilience in the face of this unimaginable pain served as a beacon of hope and inspiration to countless others. The Network she helped establish became a bastion of strength for families across Nairobi, offering solace, solidarity, and a platform for advocacy.

Mama Victor’s legacy of courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice will continue to guide and inspire us all. Our hearts and thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find comfort in the memories of her remarkable life and in the knowledge that her impact on our community will endure.
