2nd year law student, Faith Atieno
The human heart beats 4800 times per hour
However, it only takes one bullet to permanently switch off that station of power
That may sound to you like just figures
But if you take injustice personally, you know it goes beyond the trigger
“Justice be our shield and defender” goes our national anthem
Take a minute and let that sink in
Justice is Thee shield and not the sword
See how hypocritically we patriotically recite the words?
By providing celebratory drumbeats when officers take the law in their own hands?
“They won’t be killed if they don’t break the law” goes the message of conviction
But then whose lenses do we use before passing the affliction?
If we truly know that everyone is innocent till proven otherwise,
Then why do we compromise
The “otherwise” entails going through a legal process
Take a second for this one
Justice is actually a process. It is a process
See where we go wrong by deciding the fate of a person in a blink
By denying them their fair legal share of punishment if guilty? Just think
Is justice only justice when you get even? Or
Is justice still justice when you punish offenders and respect their heartbeats?
Justice is equity and not equality
While equity is white, equality is red
Equality embraces justice only when it favours him
Equity on the other hand is the dove who has confidence in the legal process
The dove whose lenses is the rule of law
The dove whose first conviction is the rule of law
The dove who understands that justice is a two way traffic
He knows that his heart beats are as equally important as your heartbeat or my heartbeat
Ladies and gentlemen, Go Ye Forth and Fight for Justice
Not with swords however but with shields....
